Each morning I woke up with a list planned in my head. It read something like: take a shower, have some quiet-time, start a load of laundry, put away dry dishes, feed the dogs, prepare breakfast so I could visit with my husband before work… all while waking, changing and feeding the children. Hah!

It was usually played out, that the baby woke me before the alarm. The baby then woke the toddler, both were hungry and needed changing and that list I made got pushed further and further off. How was I ever going to make this work? No matter how organized I was, invariably something would happen to cause a glitch in my plan.

In those days, Elisabeth Elliot came on the radio, everyday for 15 minutes -Gateway To Joy. Her continually soothing voice said God was my shepherd and He would calmly lead me. This gave me hope. She reiterated things like the spilled milk, the knock at the door, the appliance breaking, the emergency run to the doctor or store were the most important moments of the day. She would tell me to look for the interruptions, that it was God slowing me down; intervening in my plans. These were the moments of truth. Moments of testing my attitude. Moments that pushed perseverance and grew maturity (James 1:2-4). Ugh

Even today, 6 kids later (some days 7), my interruptions are a little different, but still pretty consistent.I usually don’t get my shower until the last person is out the door for school. Lost books, a forgotten lunch, missing keys, last minute ride somewhere, laundry half-started. Yet I can hear that voice from way back saying, “this is the important work, what’s your attitude going to be?”

I didn’t realize that the lesson I learned so young, was also being passed on to my children. It can be very stressful to have life put-off and changed quickly, unless you’re purposefully looking for what God is doing. Those moments matter. Don’t lose heart! God IS gently leading us where He wants us to go. And when those inevitable interruptions come, remember they are our most important work!

“Always be full of joy in the Lord.
